October 16 – The Deceitfulness of Unbelief

“See to it, brothers, that none of you has a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God… We have come to share in Christ if we hold firmly till the end the confidence we had at first.” (Hebrews3: 12, 14 NIV).

READ: Psalm 78:9-29; 37-43; 56-57

We demean God when we forget, or think He would go back on His word, or disbelieve Him. We call Him a liar through our unbelief. The Lord regards unbelief as sin. The Scriptures reminds us “He remembers His covenant forever, the word he commanded, for a thousand generations” (Psalm 105:8). Likewise, He says, “My covenant will I not break, nor alter the word that has gone out of my lips” (Psalm 89:34).

God expects us to trust Him and not doubt His words, as our unbelief makes our faith as wavering as the seas. We get nothing when we relate to God with unbelief. (James 1:6-8). An unwavering confidence in God’s word can change our circumstances. He has said, “Whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have them” (Mark 11:23); and “… My words … that go forth from my mouth… shall not return to me void, but it shall accomplish what I please, and it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it.” (Isaiah 55:11).

When we first knew Christ, we were confident of His love and His attention to our prayers and concerns. We celebrated Him by acknowledging His hand in every situation, even those that did not turn out the way we expected. We must return to this confidence and not allow it to slip through the lies of seeming “realities.” Nothing is more real than the word of God.

We should seek God’s face when faced with a challenge, and when He, speaks we should hold it with an unwavering heart. God’s word will prevail.

 Prayer:

Lord, help me to have an unwavering faith in You; give me confidence in Your word.
